Powerful prose

As most of you know I have a passion for the humble picture book. (Maybe it’s because I freak out at editing anything more than a few hundred words at a time. Guess what I’ve got to do with my 15,000 word novel this week??! Aaaagh!  But I digress…) A well written picture book can be powerful. It can impact children and parents alike and take them on a journey to a place they are all too familiar with, or somewhere they’ll never, ever go. The exquisite combination of text and illustrations brings something alive in my soul. Nothing quite captures me like a good picture book. Inside a mere 32-pages there can indeed be powerful prose. I am passionate about picture books in general, but I also have a particular area of interest within the picture book phenomenon. I love books that have a greater purpose than just to entertain. Being entertained is great. Being inspired, touched, moved, uplifted, empowered and affirmed is even better. Picture books that elicit that response could be termed ’therapeutic picture books’.
