Due to my wonderful but all-consuming role as a full-time mum, I rarely get a chance to go to any writing workshops or events. I don’t mind as I know my boys will be little for such a short time. All too soon they won’t need me quite so much and I’ll be free to disappear for a day here and there. But as my husband’s work schedule is fairly flexible I decided to see if I could schedule in a few writing workshops between now and Christmas. It turns out I could. (more…)

“The Very Cranky Bear” by Nick Bland

cranky bearI picked up “The Very Cranky Bear” by Nick Bland at the Voices on the Coast festival. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to meet Nick himself, but if I ever do I’ll have to tell him this has become our latest favourite book. The opening line is simply sensational:

Australians all let us rejoice…NOT!!!

I’m normally a very subdued kind of gal. I appreciate the fact that I live in a free country and am thankful for all the privileges that I enjoy. That doesn’t stop me being floored by the ludicracy of certain decisions, however. The Productivity Commission’s report into parallel importation of books is one such time. I’m only new to the writing scene, so excuse me if I fumble through this a little. And, up until now I can’t say I’ve really been politically active in any way apart from voting in every election (which is compulsary anyway in Australia). This latest situation has caused me to sit up and take notice and shake my head at how a supposedly smart country can be so very dumb. (more…)
