Earning My Stripes

Published by Copeland Publishing under the title “Tried and Tested” in the July 2008 edition of Melbourne’s Child and Sydney’s Child.

When does a parent really earn their stripes?  You know, the point where you actually have some bragging rights and some ‘street cred’ for having survived thus far?  Some may say it’s surfacing after those first few harrowing weeks where lack of sleep and lack of experience conspire to destabilise even the most even-keeled.  Others might point to those wonderful toddler days where the question “What is it?” can be asked 50 times before breakfast.  Or perhaps it’s when your angel child points to the young man serving you at K-Mart and makes the very loud observation of “Mummy, funny man”.  (This happened just last week, and try as I might, my angel wouldn’t stop proclaiming his observation, at louder and louder volume, until I repeated what he said.)  As valid as these experiences might be, I earned my stripes in a very particular way… (more…)

Techno-rage

I live in the techno-age, I know.  Normally I don’t mind.  Honestly, I quite like all the bibs and bobs that go along with living in 2008.  I can’t remember what I did before email, am addicted to Facebook and love my Wii.  I consider myself to be technologically adept – not an expert in anything in particular, but computer savvy enough to make my way around just about everything…and then I needed a website and email address (cue menacing music - think Jaws combined with the annoying and haunting soundtrack to Lost).  After having waded through a quagmire of acronyms – FTPs, SMTPs, POP3s to name a few – I was so proud, so confident when I launched my website to the world 12 months ago.  Since then, www.thinksmarter.com.au has been my gateway to the world and karen@thinksmarter.com.au has been the email address I use for everything business – from organising seminars to sending manuscripts to publishers, my thinksmarter address is reserved for the important things in my professional life.  So you can imagine my dismay, nay, my horror when I discovered yesterday that my web host provider had deleted my website and closed down my email account.  I had no choice.  I experienced….TECHNO-RAGE!!! Ooooh…it’s glossy!

As some of you are aware, I had my first article in a truly glossy magazine this month!  It was so exciting…the fine quality of the paper, the full page photo complementing my article, the joy of walking into a newsagent and buying the magazine off the rack with MY story in it!!  Life in writing doesn’t get much better than that.
